English

The focus of this research is on dialect variation in Igbo from phonological and lexical levels in Ụrata, Mbieri, and Ọhaọzara dialects of the Igbo language. The research aims also to challenge the linguistic theories that model dialect/language as a static entity, identifying homogeneity with structure. Further, earlier researchers have not focused proper attention on dialect variation on Igbo especially on Ụrata, Mbieri, and Ọhaọzara. Further, some Igbo speakers often do not understand some Igbo phonemes and lexis in different dialects of Igbo especially of those living at the border. This situation underlies our choice of Ụrata, Mbieri, and Ọhaọzara that are have borders with other non Igbo communities. Data for the study is through unstructured oral interview and participant observation from the indigenous speakers of Ụrata, Mbieri, and Ọhaọzara. The data were presented in tables and analysed discriptivley. The result reveals different kinds of dialect variation in Ụrata, Mbieri, and Ọhaọzara Igbo at the phonological and lexical levels of linguistics descriptions. The study reveals also that phonological and lexical items can be realised differently by different speakers or by the same speaker in different contexts but the meaning remains constant. The study shows also that language is not static but heterogeneous and varies.
