English

Laughter is an emotional process by which people react towards humourous texts. Extant studies on humour such as Adejumo(2008), Àlàbá (2008), Àremú (2005), Faké̩ye(2016), O laté̩ jú (2008) àti Ìsò̩lá(2008) àti Raji (2010) have focused on literary analysis especially on the etymology, taxonomy, approach, and their social impact as a means of communication in the society with little attention paid to the pragmatic analysis of humourous texts on social media. This study is therefore, designed to investigate the impact of pragmatic features in humourous texts on Social media with a view to determining their adherence or otherwise towards the contextual interpretation of the humourous text. The incongruity theory of humour served as the framework. Eight humourous texts were purposively selected from Whatsapp and Facebook. The finding revealed that majority of humourous texts on social media is constructed through punning which contextual necessitates ambiguity. In relation to pragmatic features, syntax of these texts is often and thoughtful structured in contrast with syntax of day-to-day-speeches. This established lexis in humour as being different from those which speakers could flout in non-humourous text. In accordance with the tenet of pragmatics, the study identified presupposition, relevance principle and Grice’s conversational maxims as the pragmatic features through which the speaker cleverly presents the punning and incongruity ideas through which his intended meaning’s implicature provokes laughter.
