English

Allegory is a symbolic representation which can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, usually a moral or political one. It is a phenomenon commonly used among Yoruba to avoid war, open confrontation or uproar. It can be done through various means like use of song, drum or verbal means. Yoruba people express their displeasure about somebody through various means especially when the person concern is powerful or influential which makes him unapproachable. It is this approach that Accord party made use to ridicule the ruling governor and his party, and praised as well as publicized their candidate as the only person that can rescue the people of Oyo state from the tyranny rule of the ruling governor. This made their campaign as well as manifesto weighty and convincing. This work examines the choice of words used, means and meaning of the words used through lexical semantic theory. The data used were collected from the political jingles of the Accord party of 2015. This work reveals the reason behind the use of this approach that Accord party made use to ridicule the ruling governor and his party and as well examines their choice of words used and connotative meaning of each words used.
